While the showers were HOT thank goodness (!) we noticed very very early in the morning that we were about 40ft from train tracks. Now, Luna and I could love the rumble of a train rolling on some tracks, but that's not what we heard. We seemed to hear only the engines blow their horns...about 17 times in the 7 hours we tried to sleep. So with the misty rain and muddy paws and wet dog smell, we slept not so much and tried to shake everything out before packing it all up and heading out. We didn't get going until about 10am because our morning routine takes about 2 hours. One hour of that is walking of course!
Today we realized what an easy drive it is to drive Out West. It's pretty much I-80. Nothing to confuse us. Just a little bit of construction which hasn't really slowed us down much. The speed limit stays around 60 and we're listening to it. Soooooo many copper choppers pulling over various types of vehicles. I'm not sure that it's all for speeding, but just in case, I'm really really watching it!
Something I've begun to notice is that while drivers REALLY follow the speed limit - even driving UNDER! - and use the left lane only for passing (I-80 has been 2 lanes 99% of the time), once a construction area arises, no one cares about the speed limit. Odd.
Other observations:
People have been so polite that if they don't lock the bathroom door and you walk in on them, THEY apologize to you!
There are very few tent campers, but most cars at the 2 KOA's we've been to now have bumper stickers that say "OBAMA" and "Envision Whirled Peas".
I haven't seen one set of cutesy outdoor lights on the awnings of mobile homes/campers and RV's like I do at the Sleepy Bear Campground in Empire.
Most KOAers are pulling mobile camper thingies instead of driving RV's.
Iowa is Hilly!
Gas mileage really goes down when the speed limit goes up to 75.
It's been an easy drive.
I've listened to 2 books on CD. Both non-fiction because that's what I like best. One called "Mistaken Identity" about 2 Michigan girls who were in a car accident in 2006. One survived. The other died. The survivor's family was told their daughter died only to find out 5 weeks later that she was alive...very dramatic. The other was a cute childhood memoir of a girl who grew up in Mooreland, Indiana, "A Girl Named Zippy." The author read it and was completely charming.
I'm now listening to "The Last Lecture".
Here is our Lunch Stop. Luna is so cute. We ran around a bit. She fetched her Kong for a little while...

We also stopped at a couple of Rest Areas. One was thee quickest stop ever because Luna had herself tangled in her seat belt restraint and I just knew that couldn't have been comfortable.
But we've arrived in Nebraska.

There's nothing, I mean nothing, around us, but the place seems very nice. Free WiFi all the time! The bathrooms are much much closer and it's all dry all around. Luna and I walked for about 45mins and she seems really tired! I think she misses sleeping with me on our memory foam mattress topper. She's waking up a lot at night...I'm tired too.
So our excitement for the night is to have a shower and watch something on the laptop. Ahhhhh. This is the kind of night we were looking for...somehow I can take a really long time to get everything set up and put away and ready for bed... Just hoping for better sleep in our little KOA Kabin.

You'll see more tomorrow!
