Why in the world would someone want to travel with her dog for 10 days, by car no less?
Because I am me and I am most me when I am with one of my dogs.
And we're going to be a part of a big surprise for a college friend in Park City, Utah!
We plan to arrive in Salt Lake City on Friday June 5th and his SURPRISE PARTY is Saturday, June 6th. The Adventure and The Vacation part is the getting there. I've never had the chance to drive across the country with my dog. I want to do it. It is a gift to myself...though we all know I'm going to miss My complete Pack...why do I plan things like this for myself? Because.

We set off on Day 1 this morning, Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009, at 8:44am, with a borrowed and overloaded car. I think I have a patent or an award for over-packing hanging on my wall at home.
Luna is a fantastic travel companion.
Our first stop was about 3 hours in. I think I happened to choose the same rest area in Indiana that Jason and I used to stop at whenever we traveled to the velodrome (No, not Thunderdome. VELOdrome. Bike racing on a track.) in Indianapolis. That was a fun bit of nostalgia. It was after this stop that I cracked into the Newman's Own Ginger-O's. Ooooo, what a special travel treat. I knew I'd need to stop for a meal, and to get gas, within an hour or two, but 2 little Ginger-O's make for such happiness. I separate the cookie and I get the side with the cream and Luna gets the ginger snap solo. She loves 'em!
I forget when we stopped for gas, but it was in Michigan City - thought that would be a fun stop in Illinois. It was! We found a little grassy area next to a hotel and across the street from a Culver's restaurant. I thought my eyes were faltering when I was reading the Culver sign to say "Custard" something and "ButterBurgers." I mean what is a "ButterBurger"? When we got closer we saw that my eyes are still fine and that's what it says...not planning on having a Culver burger, but I still found that interesting.
Anyway, the gas and lunch stop was great too. Luna got to run around. But DANGIT she slurped one slurp from a swampy area in the grassy area...gross. She better not get giardia or some other communicable disease.
I ate a roasted chicken sandwich with Swiss cheese on potato bread made from the supplies packed. Overpacking can provide some great things.
Our 3rd stop was another Rest Area that had lots of grassy area and LOTS of truckers. Popular spot.
Once we'd both peed, we had 53 miles to go!
Did I mention much of the day had been rainy? Not pouring down rain, just misty, but still...that means dirty dog with a dirty wet dog smell. Now I can live with that pretty well, but we were only like 6 hours into the trip...
We arrived at our KOA and were offered 8 hours of WiFi for free or 24 hours of WiFi for $1. Now the KOA is a place we can care about! Luna and I are sticking with the 8 hours. We've walked the grounds - she was filthy and got a Clorox Citrus Scent Wipes Bath - I've had a shower and made up the Kabin. Now we're going to cuddle up and watch some Law & Order on DVD. We saw a spider earlier and hope he has plenty to eat besides us tonight...
Let me know what you think of our Kabin!
More of our Happy Trails tomorrow!
